Zur Leistungsfähigkeit älterer Arbeitnehmer aus arbeits- und sozialmedizinischer Sicht

Although there is a shortage of experts in German industry, due to a drop in the birth rate and long-term vocational training, the phenomenon of ever earlier retirement could not be reversed. Erroneously, middle-aged employees are classified as a group of people with reduced physical and mental performance, they are regarded as being permanently ill, as clinging to old ways of doing things and as being against modern technology. There is, however, no scientific evidence to support this negative image of middle-aged employees. The general performance of a middleaged employee is no worse than that of a younger employee. There are, however, some differences. Endurance and strength is reduced, but this is well compensated for by experience and wisdom. The present changes in the occupational world — decreasing physical demands and increasing mental demands — are favourable for middle-aged employees. The phenomenon of early retirement makes no sense — neither for society nor the middle-aged employee.
