Das berufsgenossenschaftliche Heilverfahren — Ein bewährtes “Managed Care“-Modell in Deutschland

Aim: The aim of this study was to analyse which kinds of managed care elements are implemented in the guided care process of the German Employer’s Liability Insurance Association. Methods: After researching the literature, the structure and processes of the guided care process of the German Employer’s Liability Insurance Association were analysed, and implemented managed care elements were identified and described. Results: The German Employer’s Liability Insurance Association has developed a highly integrated and efficient care system specially for occupational injuries and diseases. Most important managed care elements — such as gatekeeper concepts, the selection of care providers, case management, guidelines and preventive measures — have been implemented in this structured care system for several decades. Conclusions: Despite the controversy concerning the introduction of managed care elements in the German health care system, the generally accepted guided care process of the German Employer’s Liability Insurance Association and its successfully implemented managed care elements should not be forgotten. This guided care system — mostly not associated with managed care — has proven that a highly structured and guided care process could be realised in Germany with advantages for the patients and acceptance by providers.
