“Frühpension statt Prävention“? — Zur Problematik der Frühinvalidität im Schuldienst

The early retirement of teachers due to illness today represents a major social, economic and social-medical problem. For years, in this occupational group, the percentage of persons prematurely unfit for work among the annual number of persons entering retirement has been between 50 % and 60 %. Retirement from work for health reasons takes place on average 10 years before the legal retirement age of 65 years. Social-medical studies in recent years have demonstrated the predominant importance of psychic and psychosomatic illnesses in the early retirement of teachers. The prevalence of such illnesses is much higher in female teachers than in male teachers. The following article illustrates current developments, the legal framework and recent social-medical insights into the problem of early invalidity in the education services.
